About Jayne

Jayne Carpenter PPRNCM

I trained as a Soprano on the prestigious PPRNCM course at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester.  While studying I was awarded numerous awards including The W Holmes Lieder Prize and scholarships from the RNCM, the Countess of Munster and the Ian Fleming Musical Trusts.

A finalist in the Kathleen Ferrier Memorial Scholarship Competition, I went on to win the Great Grimsby International Competition for Singers and to represent England in the Cardiff Singer of the World Competition for the BBC.

I have performed in opera, oratorio and given recitals and concert performances all over the UK.  I also teach both classical and contemporary students and give workshops and masterclasses around the UK and abroad.

Jayne Carpenter, Mezzo-Soprano, Performer

I have a wide oratorio repertoire from early to modern composers.  Notable performances include Bruckner’s Te Deum with the Halle Orchestra and Chorus, conducted by Stanislaw Skrowaczewski; Requiem (Verdi) and Elijah (Mendelssohn) conducted by Sir David Willcocks at the Royal Albert Hall and in Chichester Cathedral as part of the Festival; Mahler’s Eighth Symphony under Raymond Lomax at the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester and Mozart’s Requiem at the Lowry Theatre with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Yan-Pascal Tortelier.

I have worked with opera companies all over the UK, including English National Opera (Cosi Fan Tutte,  Mozart) and Welsh National Opera (Hansel and Gretel, Humperdinck). My operatic roles include Alcina (Alcina, Handel), Clarice (Il Mondo della Luna, Haydn), Donna Anna (Don Giovanni, Mozart), Adina (L’elisir d’Amore, Donizetti), Rosalinde (Die Fledermaus, J Strauss II), Abigaille (Nabucco, Verdi), Élisabeth de Valois (Don Carlos, Verdi), Aida (Aida, Verdi) and the title role in a concert performance of Turandot (Puccini) at Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Raymond Lomax.

As a recitalist, my performances include English song, German lieder and French and Italian songs.  Again, my repertoire encompasses early to contemporary composers.

Teaching

Teaching

If you're new to singing and want to explore your voice's potential, or if you you're wanting to improve your vocal technique and understanding of the voice to pursue a career in classical or contemporary music, I can help you.

As well as teaching one to one, in person, in Cheshire or Shropshire, I can offer you online coaching wherever you are in the world.

I started my teaching career whilst at college, coaching students from the Junior School of the Royal Northern College of Music.  I have made it a priority ever since to pass on my skills to other singers of all ages.

I have coached many successful professional opera and musical theatre singers during my career.  Former students have worked at English National Opera, Glyndebourne, Wexford and with other companies in the UK and abroad.  Successful former musical theatre students include those in the lead performances in the West End and touring productions of The Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, Shrek, Beautiful and Kinky Boots, as well as in performances with theatre companies across the world.

My priority is to teach a sound and solid technique, with the ability to communicate with an audience as a confident performer.  I teach all ages and abilities; my only prerequisite is that the student has a desire to learn.

I specialise in helping talented young singers gain entry to conservatoires and theatre schools, making sure all requirements of the audition process are covered.

Another skill I have developed over the years is helping singers who have vocal trauma; injury, overuse or misuse of the voice, vocal polyps or damage caused by reflux.  I can encourage students to nurture a healthier understanding of their vocal equipment and the body that supports it, therefore enabling them to protect their voices for the future.

Please contact me for information regarding your vocal training requirements in Cheshire and Shropshire.

Workshops

Workshops

technique and performance workshops

After first being asked to provide a technique workshop for a John Rutter singing day at the University of Manchester, I have given numerous group workshops and solo masterclasses on technique and performance.

I can offer a group session on technique for a choir or vocal ensemble, or offer solo masterclasses to prepare students for a performance or an audition.

My aim is to help participants perform to the best of their ability, feeling confident and comfortable, perfectly in control of their technique.

With a special interest in mental health, I now offer group singing workshops for well-being. Singing breathing is known to relax the body and help with symptoms of anxiety. It helps the body regulate the ‘fight or flight’ hormones, cortisol and adrenaline, which enables people to stay calm and cope better with stress.  Singing also encourages the ‘feel-good’ hormones, serotonin and dopamine, in the brain.  It is well known that a group of people, singing together for fun, will be happier and calmer at the end of the session.

Please contact me for information regarding workshops and masterclasses’.
